100 degrees? In April? Yes, by the time you read this, summer may have already reared its ugly head, even as the calendar tells us we are firmly in the middle of spring, but we desert dwellers know that more is still to come. A lot more. Temperatures that soar into the stratosphere, mornings that begin in the 100 degrees and nights that never drop below the triple digits are just a way of life in the Valley of the Sun, and we have learned to accept this simple fact. And when it comes time to socialize—because we know the events don’t stop just because it is too hot outside—we learn how to adapt our celebrations and events to the desert. Pool parties are popular, and with the advent of inflatable movie screens, we can create a modern take on a drive-in theater, choosing to have a FLOAT-in theater, relaxing on inflatable rafts as we lose ourselves in the action being projected onto the large screen. We install misters around the eaves of our patio covers and build gazebos with ceiling fans and more misters, adapting to AZ summer as we celebrate hard.
But when it comes to food, there are often considerations to which non-desert dwellers do not have to adapt—mostly the realization that no one wants to cook while the outdoor temps reach stratospheric heights of scorch!
